You never reach the final stage of your thinking until you die.
People often use two different words as if they have the same meaning.
Two words that people use interchangeably as if they mean the same thing are choose and decide.
The reason we have two words is that they refer to two different things.
Choose only relates to the future. It’s related to something that hasn’t happened yet, and that you’re going to choose it.
It hasn’t been created yet.
The act of choosing actually creates something in the future, but ‘decide’ is what happens after you choose the future.
You have to decide about the past because when you choose a new future, some of your past is not going to be valuable to you.
The Latin word from decide also is the root word for homicide, suicide, and infanticide.
It means to kill off.
When you decide something there’s something that you’re killing off.
Dan came up with: choose the future you want. Decide what part of the past gets to come along. What is so valuable about your past that it gets to come with you?
Based on what you’ve chosen and what is coming from the past, you utilize the present to make the best possible progress.

Dan Sullivan is the ultimate chef for ‘thinking’ that can bake anything he wants. He pulls all these ingredients… Do I want some confidence? Do I want some learning? Do I want some capabilities?
This is just an example of how to take what could be an enormously complex subject and simplify it.
Here’s how to think about your past, present and future
There’s amazing differences between people’s clarity and confusion about this.
Your future is actually something that you create in your mind.
You’re the one who’s telling the story and that’s a hard thing for most people, because they would like to think that the past was something that was done to them.
It’s actually a story created about the actual experiences.
Once you get that freedom that you actually have a creative ability you can make as powerful as you want about making up the future and making up the past, you have this enormous freedom of thought.
You can look at the present and say, “The present is real because the present is the only place where you can actually take action.”
You can’t take action in the future. You can’t take action in the past, but you can take action in the present.
Create a very powerful future and a very useful past that allows you to create a very dynamic present.
It can take years for people to wrap their mind around this.
Once understood this amazing freedom of thought, freedom of creativity, and freedom of action is available.
Past, present, and future are like muscles. They’re “thinking muscles.” If you use them, you’ll get stronger with them.
Dan’s relationship with business partner and wife Babs Smith is marvelously creative and supportive. The future is one where Babs and Dan grow every day within that relationship.
At the end of each day, they are stronger in some way than we were the day before.
That’s always going to be true, like headlights for the next 50 years. Those are high beams that decide what part of the past comes along at this stage.

You’ll have really great people and you’ll have really great thoughts.
The central thing is how you think about things.
