    • Joe: How do you define intimacy?
    • Babs: Personally, if there’s something one person proposes an idea, and both parties don’t agree, you have to keep working and talking until either the idea changes or the person changes to allow it to go forward.
    • Dan: “Intimacy is exclusive.” I have teamwork with other people but intimacy is 100% with Babs.
    • “If the teamwork can’t be defined in an impact filter I’m not interested in it.”
    • Joe: “Intimacy is a mutual exploration of a shared safe place.”
    • What do you mean by being totally in control of the forward motion of the company?
      • “Dan: I have one life partner, and one business partner.” Doesn’t have a lot of room for other relationships other than teamwork.
      • “I want partnerships that don’t require meetings.” (and lawyers!)
    • Joe met his assistant Eunice through her husband Marty, Joe’s best friend from high school. They are very different but very aligned in their value system, which leads to phenomenal teamwork.
      • Eunice – We both genuinely respect and value what the other brings. We believe in each other and support each other.
      • Joe: And we have fun together! Eunice is very clear on her role, doesn’t want to be doing what Joe’s doing. She has no entitlement attitude; she’s all about value creation.
    • Dan – These are important concepts: There’s no entitlement at the front end and there’s… no retirement at the end.
    • Dan – “People need to understand: The marketplace doesn’t owe you anything. – The world wouldn’t be a worse place if you had never existed.”
    • Dan: without the partnership Dan and Babs had from the beginning, there could be no Strategic Coach. It’s not something either one could have created alone.
      • “I think there’s a magic to relationships.”
      • “Magic is not replicable and is not transferrable.”
    • Alignment: Joe has learned from Dan and Babs how to pay attention when relationships feel out of alignment, take it seriously, it’s a warning.
    • For Joe, one of the biggest draws of Strategic Coach is that it helps people get their life together;
      • By teaching people to take care of themselves first because if you can take care of yourself, by taking time off, you bring more energy to your business.
      • Growth for most people represents more work, more stress. Strategic Coach teaches that it’s just the opposite: “Multiplication by Subtraction”
      • Alignment is a key element to their success. (48:00)
    • Being in alignment doesn’t always mean things go well from the beginning! Early on, Joe was brought in for consulting with Strategic Coach and inadvertently offended Babs. Ultimately, he won her over, with a little help from Dan, who could see that they were truly aligned with Joe in their values.
    • Dan Kennedy “You can either be an annoying pest or a welcome guest.”
    • Dan: “You’ve got to communicate care, before you communicate knowledge.”
    • You’re asking people to make room in their minds for what you are suggesting. If you invalidate them or if they don’t feel safe, you put them in a defensive position.
    • Joe’s recommendation: “Bring your messes to Strategic Coach.”
    • Dan has a gift for seeing past someone’s flaws to their skills and their abilities.
    • Joe: “Every time I go there, [Strategic Coach] when I leave – I feel better. I have more clarity, more confidence, more capability and more direction. “
    • Dan and Babs take off 155 days a year, and have every year, for 25 years. (
    • Dan: The principle “You’ve got to pay yourself first,” applies to both money AND time.
    • Dan: Strategic Coach staff take almost the same amount of time off.  “We don’t do it for compensation. We do it so they don’t burn out.”
    • Joe: “Ultimately, it’s about being responsible for where your business is, where life is, where your relationships are and setting things up so you can respond…
    • Joe asks “What do you two love most about each other?
      • Babs: Dan tickles my heart and tickles my head – inside. I’ve always loved listening to him talk and how he integrates all the stuff that is happening in the world. It’s very empowering.” He tickles me, and he makes me laugh.”
      • Dan: “ I noticed right from the beginning that Babs presence had a magical impact on everyone she encountered.”
      • We’ve known each other for 35 years and are together all the time. Today, if she’s been gone and comes in the room, my heart takes a jump.”
