EPISODE 250

Make Your Marketing Valuable Even If They Never Buy: Education Based Marketing with Dan Sullivan and Joe Polish

Episode Summary

Dan Sullivan and Joe Polish have spent more than 30 years selling high-level programs that nobody wakes up wanting to buy. In this episode, they break down the education based marketing that makes it work: what to teach, what to give away, and why the most educated Prospects become the best Clients.

Here’s what you’re about to discover in this conversation:

  • The one question Dan asks every Prospect that instantly tells him whether a relationship is even possible (and why he walks out if they won’t answer it).
  • Why Joe ignored a Prospect’s refusal to answer that same question and ended up watching a business knock off his products.
  • The $1,800 carpet cleaning booklet that became the seed for billions of dollars in Client revenue.
  • Why Joe’s guide says “discover” instead of “learn,” and the 10-minute recorded message that changed his entire business.
  • How a first-time candidate used three questions with 40 community leaders to take 63% of the vote in a seven-way primary.
  • Dan’s 1-5-10 scoring exercise that has given him 317 great yesterdays in a row (PLUS: why he says it’s made this the slowest year of his life).

Show Notes

The R-Factor Question: Find Out if a Relationship Is Possible

  • Dan’s question: “If we were having this discussion three years from today, looking back, what has to happen in your life for you to feel happy with your progress?”
  • Anyone who refuses to answer is telling you they like your information but don’t want a relationship with you.
  • The biggest hidden cost for Entrepreneurs is time wasted selling to people who never wanted to be engaged.

Dangers, Opportunities, and Strengths

  • Dan believes everyone is balancing three emotions daily: fear of what they could lose, excitement about what they could gain, and confidence in what they already have.
  • When people answer the question, they buy a relationship and a future, which matters most in uncertain times when people “lose their future” and stop spending.
  • One referral talked for 23 minutes straight, then said, “It sounds like your program’s really good.”

The Prospect Who Didn’t Get a Second Chance

  • A lawyer refused to answer Dan’s question during a house call, so Dan thanked him for saving them both time and got up to leave.
  • The lawyer called for years asking to start over. Dan’s answer never changed: you get one chance.
  • Dan calls it an “unnatural act”: the salesperson rejecting the Prospect, and why it’s great for morale.

What Joe Learned the Hard Way

  • Joe joined Strategic Coach in 1997 after receiving an info pack with a cassette tape.
  • He once kept helping a company whose co-owner wouldn’t answer the R-Factor Question. They later knocked off his products and sold competing versions.
  • Some people are collaborative and some are only competitive. Marketing should sift, sort, and screen right-fit Clients from wrong-fit ones.

Entrepreneurs Are Buying Freedom

  • After 52 years of coaching, Dan says Entrepreneurs want four freedoms: time, money, relationship, and purpose.
  • Only about 5% of the working population was self-employed in 1974, and it was still about 5% in 2025.
  • From the first engagement, prospects should be learning about themselves, because “that’s the only thing they want to buy.”

Using DOS to Win an Election

  • A financial advisor running for state senate interviewed 20 Democrats and 20 Republicans using the Dangers, Opportunities, and Strengths questions.
  • Follow-up letters reflecting their own words back to them blew people away, and the overlapping answers became the campaign platform.
  • He took 63% of the primary vote against six other candidates and went on to win three times.

Anything You Put in Front of Somebody Is Marketing

  • Joe shares Gary Halbert’s line: “Only the hungriest fish snap at the crappiest bait.”
  • Selling happens face to face. Marketing is what gets someone there pre-interested, pre-motivated, pre-qualified, and predisposed to buy.
  • Dan’s definition of selling: getting someone intellectually engaged in a future result that’s good for them and emotionally committed to take action.

Inside the Original Consumer Awareness Guide

  • Joe paid a copywriter $1,800 and spent a month teaching him carpet cleaning to create his first guide.
  • Sections included “How to Avoid Four Carpet Cleaning Rip-Offs,” “Six Costly Misconceptions,” and “Crawling Critters and Crud.”
  • The formula works for any category: rip-offs to avoid, misconceptions, mistakes, and questions to ask before you hire.
  • People don’t want to learn. They want to discover, and they want to make an informed, intelligent decision.

From Mailed Guide to Free Recorded Message

  • When callers asked for prices, Joe mailed the guide with an offer for a free room of cleaning and a carpet audit.
  • For people who needed service fast, he turned the guide into a 10-minute, 24/7 free recorded message.
  • Ads saying “Don’t call any carpet cleaner until you listen to this recorded message” changed his entire business.

Supply, Demand, and the Toilet Paper Lesson

  • In Piranha Marketing, Joe said if you had the only garage full of toilet paper, a cardboard sign would sell it. Years later, the pandemic proved him right.
  • If people are asking only about price, it’s because you haven’t given them any other criteria to decide.

Why Educated Prospects Make Better Clients

  • Dan’s new Yesterday Creates Tomorrow exercise has people score every activity 1, 5, or 10. By mid-afternoon, everyone in the room had beaten yesterday’s score.
  • Dan is on day 317 of great yesterdays and says his 82nd year has been his best and slowest year ever.
  • Joe’s carpet cleaning Clients who attended a one-day seminar implemented faster and better than those who only used mail and tapes.
  • “It’s not what people know, it’s what they don’t know that they don’t know that makes all the difference.”

Richard Viguerie on Educating Your Market

  • At 93, Richard still studies marketing two to three hours a day, six days a week.
  • He pioneered targeted political direct mail, sending different messages to different postal zones long before the internet.
  • Dean Jackson retells the story of Richard hand-copying 12,000 donor names with six helpers and index cards.

Making Marketing Valuable to People Who Never Buy

  • Who Not How has helped far more readers than will ever join Strategic Coach or Genius Network, and that’s the point.
  • Joe and Dean’s I Love Marketing rule: give away so much value that people complain you’re not selling anything.
  • “If you found this valuable, imagine how useful it would be if you gave us money.”
